How Kidney Donation Works
Why Living Donation Matters
Living donations save lives! A living donor kidney offers the best possible outcome. It lasts longer, functions better, and has a lower risk of rejection. Most importantly, it eliminates the years‑long wait on the national transplant list.
Your willingness to explore donation could change the entire course of my life. Most people don’t realize that a healthy person can donate one kidney and continue living a full, normal life. For someone with kidney failure, a living donor can mean decades of added health, freedom, and time with loved ones.
What Donors Should Know
Donating a kidney does not reduce life expectancy
Donors typically return to normal activities within 4–6 weeks
All medical costs for the donor’s evaluation and procedure are covered by the recipient’s insurance
Donors can live anywhere in the U.S. and complete all evaluation and testing locally
Donors are compensated for lost wages and any travel expenses during the evaluation and donation process
Who Can Donate?
You may be able to donate if you:
Are generally healthy
Are at least 18 years old
Have normal kidney function
Do not have uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease
Even if you’re not a match for me, you can still help through paired exchange, where two donor–recipient pairs swap kidneys so everyone gets a compatible match.
